LOST CREEK, W.Va. (WV News) — Tyler Consolidated took advantage of seven walks, three errors and a hit batsman to go with 11 hits to down South Harrison 10-4 in prep softball action Thursday at SHHS.
The Silver Knights scored three runs in the first and eventually built an 8-0 lead before the Hawks rallied with four runs in the fourth, but reliever Hailey Sandy slammed the door for TC and the Knights added single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to secure the victory.
“Hailey has done that for us this season, showing a lot of determination in becoming a great closer for us,” coach Sam Livingston said. “I thought our defense really backed both of our pitchers.”
The Knights committed just two errors and turned a pair of double plays, one that got starting and winning pitcher McKenzie Utt out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning.
Tyler started strong with a three-run first.
Kenzie Livingston led off with a bunt single and Jahaila Gorrell followed with a walk. Alexis Livingston struck out, but got aboard on a dropped strike three, with Kenzie Livingston scoring on the error, as well as Gorrell. Later, Alexis Haught, running for Alexis Livingston, scored thanks to an error after a single from Sandy.
K. Livingston added another run in the second. After drawing a two-out walk and stealing second, she scored on Gorrell’s single to right.
Tyler moved the lead to 8-0 with a four-run fourth.
After two outs, Isabella Murray got aboard on an error, and K. Livingston followed with a walk. Gorrell’s single to left then loaded the bases before A. Livingston belted a two-run single for a 6-0 lead. Lexus Rocchio then slapped a single over the first base bag to score Gorrell. Haught, again running for A. Livingston, scored again when Sandy drew a bases loaded walk.
South Harrison finally retaliated to slice the TC lead in half in the bottom of the fourth.
Abbi Cowger led off with a single up the middle. Cowger was then erased when Ayva Thomas got aboard on a fielder’s choice. Alexis Talbott followed and reached on an error that scored Thomas. Talbott then scored on a wild pitch before Keelie Trout singled. Alexis Peck then drew a walk and both Trout and Peck moved up before Ava Louk drove home Trout with a groundout and Peck scoring on the play as well.
After a walk to the following hitter Kaylee Lindsey, Sandy was brought on in relief to quell the uprising.
“We just wait too long to get in the game,” SH coach Andi Koontz said. “We’re always playing catchup, but today we didn’t have enough.”
Louk gave up just two runs on four hits in 3.1 innings to keep the Hawks in striking distance. Cowger had three of the five SH hits.
The loss dropped the Hawks to a record of 12-14.
Gorrell had three hits for Knights, now 12-12 on the season. A. Livingston and Shuman had two hits apiece.
“We seem to be getting stronger as the season goes,” coach Livingston said. “We’re a young team, but these girls are learning and getting better.”
